Yass Prize Background:
The mission of the Yass Prize and STOP Awards Initiative is to identify and support more best in class education providers who can tackle the big education challenges of the day and deliver an education for students that is Sustainable, Transformational, Outstanding and Permissionless. It’s more than an awards program or a philanthropic endeavor. It is an effort to find, reward, celebrate and expand best-in-class education organizations from every sector, in every state, and to create unprecedented partnerships that accelerate impact with the speed and urgency our students deserve. It’s a movement intended to transform education for everyone.
Since 2021, the Yass Foundation for Education has awarded more than $60 million in grants to new and alumni organizations, including the prestigious $1 million Yass Prize to transform education, given to the group that most exemplifies the STOP principles.
Meet Jeff and Janine Yass:
For more than 25 years, the Yass’ have dedicated their time, their intellect and their resources to creating excellent schools for parents to have meaningful choices. But when the Covid crisis revealed and magnified the vast inequities that surround a majority of our students, they pivoted to a more impactful way to spend their resources to speed up the pace of improving student lives.
“We have recognized the incredible heroism of healthcare and front line workers who went above and beyond during COVID,” Janine said to Jeff during the crisis, “but look at all the heroes in education who served the underserved with in-person or quality virtual education students despite the challenges. We should recognize them, too,” she said.
Thus it was that Janine’s passion for education opportunity for all students sparked the creation of the Yass Prize and the STOP Awards Initiative. They were so inspired by the effort, by the providers and educators and innovators that the inaugural competition uncovered, that she committed to creating the Yass Foundation for Education to redirect all of their education philanthropy, to expand the number of providers working to provide a truly STOP-enabled education for students. Moving from reform to transform, Janine’s vision is fueling a new renaissance in education, based on the premise that every parent deserves the ability to provide their students with individualized, 21st century education opportunities offered in supportive environments alongside their peers. Faith Grows in City Gardens
“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”— Matthew 17:20
As a mother and a new urban farmer here in the City of Philadelphia, I have learned that God can make life grow anywhere—between rowhomes, in raised beds, on rooftops, and in small community gardens. The mustard seed reminds me daily that even in the city, faith and food can rise from the smallest spaces.
It is this reminder, Mustard Seed Faith Project, that we will be sharing with people across our city, commonwealth, and country. God can do anything with a person that has the faith and belief the size of a mustard seed!
How We Grow Mustard Seeds in Philly
In Philadelphia’s urban soil, we grow mustard with intention, stewardship, and prayer.
- Planting Season: Early spring and fall—perfect for our city climate
- Soil: Raised beds or containers with clean, healthy soil
- Sun: Full sun, even if it comes in pieces between buildings
- Water: Consistent watering, especially through warm city summers
- Harvest Time: Greens in about one month; seeds in three to four months
Mustard thrives in the city! It grows fast, needs little space, and teaches us that abundance doesn’t depend on acreage.
